App Appreciation: Helpful Apps for Everyday

These days, whatever you want to do, there’s probably an app for that. Helpful apps can assist with all kinds of things, from health and fitness to GPS (Global Positioning System) and transportation. Here are some suggestions for both Apple and Android devices. These apps are free to download.

Fitness

Whether you’re a workout warrior or daily walker, apps can help you keep track – and stay on track – with your fitness regime. Some apps to consider include Workout Trainer, which has an array of workouts, from easy to brutal. If working up a sweat isn’t your thing, try Daily Yoga to learn poses, watch videos and more to reach fitness goals and de-stress.

Mental Agility

Crossword puzzles have long been a favorite for sharpening the mind. Apps, available for smartphones as well as computer, make exercising your memory and focus fun with game-like interaction. Some of the most popular are Lumosity, CigniFit for iPad, Elevate, and Peak. For stress-relief and wellbeing, try Happify.

GPS & Transportation

Friends and spouses can use Glympse to keep track of each other’s whereabouts via GPS. The location-sharing app can be used on any phone that has access to the Internet.

Don’t expect a yellow cab to pull up when you hail a ride with Uber or Lyft. Prescreened drivers use their own well-maintained cars in a rainbow of colors. You could save time and money on rides to the airport or the eye doctor but be aware of “demand pricing” which means the prices go up during busy periods (for example, on New Year’s Eve). Set up your account ahead of time and it’s as easy as a tap on the “Request Pickup” button. Some traditional taxi companies offer similar apps to keep up with the digital age.
