Try Something New, Different and Fun in 2017

If you’re someone who makes New Year’s resolutions, be sure to leave room on your list for some new adventures. Make 2017 the year you try something new and different. It can be fun and stimulating to get out of your comfort zone and be the new kid. Try it!

Learn to play an instrument

Always marvel when you see someone playing an instrument? Join their ranks and start taking music lessons. Cello, banjo, saxophone or piano, pick one you think you’ll enjoy hearing yourself play.

Cook meals from around the world

Try cooking food from different countries on a regular basis. Invite friends to teach you their favorite family recipe. Tune into a cooking show like Mexico One Plate at a Time with Rick Bayless or Aarti Party, or find a cooking class to learn how to cook something with exotic flavors.

Learn a foreign language

Take a course to learn the language of your choice, or to brush up on a language you learned long ago. Tie it into a planned trip if you like. Learn online—Rosetta Stone and Duolingo are well-known options.

Join a local hiking group

Join a hiking group based on your level of expertise; if you’re brand new, stick with beginners! Look for outings through your local parks department or REI Stores. You’ll get to socialize, exercise and discover new places all at the same time.

Learn winetasting

You may know what you like (merlot or chardonnay?), but a wine tasting class can allow you to learn the finer points of winetasting. You’ll meet other wine-lovers while learning about different kinds of wine you’ve probably been missing out on.
