One of the major perks of a 55+ community is the active lifestyle they promote–and you don’t have to leave home to get it! After all, what’s not to love about resort-style amenities like stunning pools, luxury spas, putting greens and on-site golf courses? But, look, no matter how fabulous your community might be, sometimes you just have to get out. We get it. Choosing the right location for your 55+ community can really allow you to have great adventures beyond the amenities.

Off-Site Adventures

One of the great things about living in a 55+ community is that you don’t always have to plan these off-site adventures by yourself. On-site lifestyle directors often plan group trips to popular outdoor destinations, area cultural attractions, fine dining or retail trips. Plus, the great thing about lifestyle directors on-site is that even if you don’t see an off-site adventure that appeals to you, they can help craft one to your liking and find others in the community who have similar interests and would like to join on an adventure. Some communities are so invested in offering off-site adventures to their residents that they employ a full-time lifestyle director.

Communities located near beaches and parks may offer adventure clubs for those who like to hike, bike or camp. If you’re interested in unplanned activities or being in smaller groups, spending a day with your family and closest neighbors on the beach or picnicking in a state park can be a great way to get out.

If you’re less of a nature-person, look for a 55+ community that’s close to a town or smaller city. Lunch or brunch clubs are a great way to get out and experience local restaurants, and organized retail trips or fine dining excursions can help you explore the best of what your area has to offer. Arts and culture fans can live in a community that offers organized trips to area museums and even get tickets to local concerts or theatrical productions.

Another way to get out and invest in the surrounding community is to volunteer. Lots of organizations are looking for 55+ volunteers and lifestyle directors can help guide you to any number of area nonprofits that are looking for some extra help.

No matter your interests be sure to pick a community that’s close to what you love. Just because you have everything you might need right in your backyard doesn’t mean your adventures have to stop there!
